When weaning from breastfeeding, the body goes through another big hormonal shift. Prolactin, the hormone responsible for lactation production that can create feelings of calmness and happiness, and oxytocin, the “love hormone” that helps form a strong bond with the baby, drops which may cause feelings of depression, uneasiness, and/or irregular menstruation.  

This formula helps restrain lactation and ease emotional turmoil due to shifting hormones to make weaning a smoother transition.

Fermented Soybean (Dan Dou Chi, 淡豆豉)

Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu, 神曲) 

Barley Sprout (Mai Ya, 麥芽) 

 

THE FORMULA EXPLAINED 

Relieves Irritability and Balances Emotions – Hormonal shifts may cause some folks to experience depression, low moods, sadness, and/or irritability when weaning. Fermented Soybean (Dan Dou Chi) eliminates irritability restlessness and insomnia. 

Restrains Lactation – Barley Sprout (Mai Ya) helps to restrain lactation and eases distended and painful breasts.  

Facilitates Smooth Flow of Liver Qi – When Liver Qi is constrained, emotional disharmony can occur such as depression, frustration, irritability, and/or anger. Weaning causes a big hormonal shift that may induce the above symptoms. Barley Sprout (Mai Ya) facilitates the smooth flow of Liver Qi. 

Relieves Breast Tenderness – Barley Sprout (Mai Ya) combined with Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu) relieves breast tenderness and swelling associated with discontinuing nursing.  

Benefits Digestion – Medicated Leaven (Shen Qu) and Barley Sprout (Mai Ya) reduces food stagnation and strengthens the Stomach to benefit digestion, ease bloating, and boost poor appetite.  

 

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS 

Lightly rinse the herbs in cold water and bring to a boil in 3-4 cups of water to simmer for about 30-45 minutes. Keep the pot covered with a lid. Always drink warm or hot!

 

RECOMMENDED DOSE 

Each batch of this formula is 2 servings, and should be consumed twice a day. It is recommended that this formula be taken for 1 week while weaning.
